ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY I

Project 1: Precedent Study & Analysis

Sketches Presentation & Analysis Report

The precedent study and analysis sketches, and analysis presentation board consist of illustrative and abstractive diagrams, drawings and text. The drawings should include actual and conceptual design ideas of floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches expressing clarity and in-depth investigation of the precedent studies.

As for my part, it was mainly on spatial organisation of the Luxor temple. This includes spatial planning, landscape/site setting, building sequence and process, public and private spaces, Axis, symmetry/ asymmetry, balance, repetitive to unique, additive and subtractive and finally hierarchy. All these explained through a series of sketches and annotations.

The highlight of the temple were the columns, being important as a structure, aesthetic and to record histories. Throughout each different space were different sets of columns. Thus the columns were a way to tell the difference in each space and their building process.

Final Presentation Board

Hence, after much research and compilation. I have managed to focus mainly on their building process and sequence because this affected every different part of the spatial organisation. The axis of the temple changed due the latest building extension and each different building sequence has their own specific columns.

There were three main columns throughout the temple. From repetition to uniqueness, the repetition of columns showed their uniqueness when they vary in types and function. Especially the papyrus columns (bell) located at the colonnade of amenhotep lll which functioned to record the process of the 'Feast of the Opet' festival.

Reflection

Throughout the entire project, it taught me to research in detail which involves going through a lot of books. The information for this temple was not in abundance henceforth came the difficulty. I experienced gathering little puzzles from each book and website that I have found to piece into a final picture of the Luxor temple.

Learning about such historical places should not just be during our young days. Visiting such places in the future also becomes a learning platform for us to understand more of the building, most importantly: first-hand experience of the area no matter the age.

After this project and even after many lectures, I had an expanded view on the different architectures of different places and eras. I managed to understand more about how different buildings were built and compared them to the modern buildings. Such amazing architecture with the given technologies.
