Building Structure

Project 1: Roof Trusses

In a group of five, we are required to develop a design based on one of our design studio project. As a group, we are tasked to re-design the roof of that particular building by using truss designs. The design of the roof truss should meet the criteria of having high aesthetic value and minimal construction material.

Throughout this exercise, we were able to evaluate and identify the tension and compression members in a truss structure, explore and apply understanding of load distribution and arrangement of members in a truss structure.

Project 2: Structural Analysis of a Bungalow

The second project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of building structure as it is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal.

The project is divided into two parts. The first component is a group work of three where we have to design a two storey bungalow which consist of certain basic spaces such as living hall, dining area, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, storerooms etc. Later on, we are to carry out structural framing for the building to design the skeleton of the structure.

The second part of this project is an individual component where we have to analyse six beams and three columns each, which includes the load diagram, bending moment diagram and shear force diagram for the beam analysis; and estimated column load and size for the column analysis.

An A4 report is compiled to document our analysis.
