Research Poster on Passive Design Strategies

Within this group project of 5 people, the project aims to allow us, students, to research and come up with certain passive design strategies that are suitable to a current building that faces thermal issues or relying too much on active cooling methods. We are to survey a building of our own choice which features passive design strategy for tropical climate within the Klang Valley and highlight any thermal problems found within the building and design a solution to overcome the problem. Should there be none, we are to study on the successful passive cooling strategies that have already been initiated. Much research and survey have to be carried out on the building in regards to the position of the building and the materials and cooling designs used.

As for my group, we have researched and surveyed on a community library in Bangsar, known as L45 Community Library. It mainly features many passive cooling designs such as the use of eaves and stack ventilation but however those designs have to seem to fail as all the openings have been shut and an air-conditioner has been installed within the space. The selected space features 3 mezzanine floors with a skylight that illuminates the space. Even with the air-conditiner installed, the spaces are still very warm, mainly due to the skylight above which transmits a high percentage of heat. As such, the skylight was the main problem but it cannot be removed due to its purpose to illuminate the library. Hence, my group have done research on multiple designs and have finally come up with a design proposal to tackle the problem of having a hot space.
