BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Project 1: Experiencing Construction

Experiencing, documenting and analysing the construction process

Within this project, students are required to understand the construction process through a real-life ongoing project to help understand the design process which is from a conceptual stage towards construction

Given the task to select an ongoing construction site of  a medium or low rise building, we are to study and document a report based on the syllabus that we have covered throughout the lectures and apply the knowledge into the on-site experiential learning.

Throughout the project, my group and I managed to understand the construction processes elements more as we experience the construction of a building first hand. We managed to document information regarding from the very start of the constructoin which is about setting out and earth works until even the the superstructures are built.

Apart from that, materials and technologies that are used at sites were exposed to us as the contractors and architect tour my group around the construction site.

Project 2: Construction Detail and Specification

The second project is a continuation of the first where it is an integrated project with Architectural Studio II. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from the prior project. Within this project, it emphasizes on the manual construction that relates to timber/steel details and specifications.

This project allows us to adapt the conventional building construction technologies and processes to fit into our design even though technical knowledge is different with design. This aims to promote understanding of the strong inter-relationship between these two areas of study.

We are required to show 3 architectural detailings which includes the roof, any superstructure and the joints/connection that exists for the structural elements. The details have to be interesting and suited for each of our own design.

In my case, I have provided detailings regarding to a full timber-built house which include a monopitch roof, flooring details and a unusual foundation type which is suited for treehouses.
